This picture book is inspired by 17th century French trade engravings when a lady goes to the market to buy gifts for a "special someone." These gifts aren't typical gifts you would buy today, but it uses each letter of the alphabet to describe what people would have bought in the market long ago. She takes each letter and makes it into a person and then embellishes them with the item she bought relating to that letter. Some things include apples, clocks, quilts, wigs, and zippers.
